Gateways "Gateway" Pages (Entrances To Multiple Resources) [or back to the category list]

These are general-information gateways; other gateway pages are listed by gateway subject.

To help you better use these, here is a nice discussion of how to search data resources productively.
For yet more internet resources, check out the Searches page of this site.

The Word Wide Web Virtual Library: a massive on-line library--like a "super-encyclopedia" (it's not a single work but a collection of edited links lists).

The Internet Public Library: simply put, a tremendous resource.

Itools: another great gateway to a host of useful internet services.

The Free Internet Encyclopedia: yet another wonderful resource.

Reference Links: links to sites with library-type tools available.

Google, News "Advanced Search": (this is really a Search tool, but I include it here too)--an easy web-based connection to the wealth of information, fun, and general weirdness of "news groups"; you can turn up articles on almost anything up to and including the kitchen sink (and you generally can get more realistic and down-to-earth personal information on usenet than from any number of web pages).

PlacesNamed: a hypertext collection of geographic and other reference information; it currently includes information about nations, ISO country codes, international telephone access codes, North American telephone area codes, North American states and provinces, United States cities and counties, five-digit US Postal Service Zip Codes, American proper names, and some foreign places (be sure to read up on their indexing scheme before using it).

Probert Encyclopedia: massive (in Australia and so sometimes slow to load).

Miscellaneous Reference Sites: a handy list of usual and unusual (from Native American sites to a registry of speed traps) web reference sites.

The Free Site: links to hordes of sites offering, yes, free stuff of all kinds--some computer-related (type fonts, Java code), some not (free food samples). Fun to browse!

Bot Spot: locate most or all of the "search robots" working the internet to provide you with lots and lots of vital and useful info you could never track down on your own--things like current price comparisons for consumer goods, for example (go to their Search page to select a kind of information, such as Shopping Bots).

OmniKnow: an online encyclopedia--plus, for each of the million or so topics, a list of human-reviewed-and-approved relevant links.

Health & Medicine Health & Medicine [or back to the category list]

Be especially careful about getting medical information from websites!
Use websites for background information--do not try to be your own physician!

MedExplorer: a gateway page for medical- and health-related links.

Medic.Net's MedLinx: another medicine/health gateway page.

NetRef: the "Medical Reference Library of the Net."

The Virtual Hospital: an extensive medical-info site--be sure to read their "Introduction" page.

Kids In Danger: possibly or probably dangerous child-care products still being marketed.

Ask Dr. Weil: a popular physician gives advice.

Health Economics: health economics, medical, and pharmacy resources on the internet.

Medicare: the official U.S. Government internet site for Medicare consumer information.

ARM Indices: frequent updates of the indices (indexes if you prefer that plural) on which adjustable-mortgage rates are based.

Health-Related Charities Rated: the Physicians' Committee For Responsible Medicine evaluates health-related charitable organizations as to their support of animal experimentation, which the PCRM holds is unnecessary and cruel.

Investment-Related Web Sites: links to many sites with useful information on investing your money.

Mutual-Fund-Related Sites: several are listed (don't miss the "Fund Alarm" site).

Financial Calculators: calculate mortgage payments and much more like that.

TRAC: help with finding a low-cost telephone long-distance carrier--plus, how to have free wireless (cellular) access to 911 (emergency).

Education Education [or back to the category list]

CollegeView: the somewhat limited but free version of a commercial service offering information on colleges and scholarships for students and parents.

The Education Index: an annotated directory of education-related sites; it is not a catalog of every site on a given subject, only of those that they think well-organized, reliable, and valuable (sites are categorized by subject and "lifestage").

Education Week: a site "for people interested in education reform, schools, and the policies that guide them" (American Education's online newspaper of record).
